Tharisa plc (Tharisa) is a European-headquartered mining and metallurgical group. The Group’s strategic objective is to generate value by becoming a leading, vertically integrated mining group focused on the PGM industry and steel supply chain, with its world-class South African mining assets serving growing Chinese and global demand through integrated processing, trading and logistics operations.
The Tharisa Mine is located on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex, approximately 95km north-west of Johannesburg and 45km east of Rustenburg, and is easily accessible by road and supported by well-developed and maintained infrastructure. The Bushveld Complex contains more than 70% of the world’s known PGM resources and 75% of the world’s known chrome resources. The Tharisa Mine property covers approximately 5,590ha and has a deposit with an outcrop strike length of approximately 5km. The Group holds mining rights to the mine through its 74% interest in Tharisa Minerals, which it acquired in February 2009.
The Group has entered into a strategic partnership with Fujian Wuhang, one of the largest privately-owned stainless steel producers in China to construct the Tharisa Ferrochrome Smelter which will be located at Luoyuan Bay, Fujian Province, China, at a coastal site adjacent to the Baosteel Desheng Stainless Steel Plant. The smelter will be owned by Tharisa Fujian Industrial, a wholly foreign-owned enterprise in which the Group and Fujian Wuhang indirectly hold 85% and 15% interests respectively.
The Group is led by a strong management team with significant sector expertise and a proven track record of working together in the successful identification, development and operation of African mining projects.
